The physical and mechanical properties of Canadian aspen（Populus tremuloides Michx.） from Alberta were examined and compared with the properties of China native poplar. The physical properties of Canadian aspen were comparably similar to those of native poplar, while the Canadian aspen was slightly lower in density. The mechanical properties of Canadian aspen were higher than those of native poplar from China except the harness. The differential drying shrinkage and the rate of expansion between radial and tangential direction remained minor. Therefore, it was suggested that the Canadian aspen can be one of substitute species of native poplar used in furniture and handicrafts manufactory in China.
