In order to manufacture low-density particleboard, poplar and eucalyptus wood particles as well as expanded polystyrene(EPS) foam particles were used to make three-layer particleboard samples with 500 kg/m,3, of panel density.EPS foam particles were mixed with core layer wood particle as fillers. The effect of wood species on vertical density profile and physio-mechanical properties of the samples was investigated. Results showed that biggest vertical density difference between the core layer and the face layer was observed when the poplar fine particles were used at the face layers and the eucalyptus coarse particles at the core layer. The physical and mechanical properties could meet the requirements of furniture-use particleboard for dry conditions(Type P2) in GB/T 4897—2015.
