This paper presented theoretical principles and operational configuration of flexible manufacturing system（FMS）. Applications of the FMS platform in furniture industry were explored based on feasibility and necessary study results. Three key elements of the FMS were further discussed in detail, including standardized product design and process regulations, modularized flexible manufacturing system, and dynamic information management and control. Working process of the FMS model was also explained for reference to furniture industries in China.
