CaO,MgO,ZnO and BaO were used as catalysts to make phenol-urea-formaldehyde(PUF)resins.The molar ratio effects of formaldehyde to urea plus phenol, molar ratio of sodium hydroxide to phenol, and adding stage, adding amount and type of divalent metal oxide on panel bonding strength, gel time and pot life were evaluated and optimized through orthogonal experimentation. The results showed that divalent metal oxides as catalysts were effective to make fast curing PUF resin with shortened gel time compared with the control resin. The optimized parameters were 0.50% ZnO of phenol mass added at the reaction beginning with 2.0molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea plus phenol and 0.6molar ratio of sodium hydroxide to phenol.
