Melamine formaldehyde(MF)resin is a commonly-used resin to impregnate decorative paper which is laminated to the surfaces of wood-based panels. To improve the stability, shelf life, and flexibility of melamine formaldehyde(MF)resin, the authors selected diglycol and caprolactam to modify common melamine formaldehyde resin. The effect of four selected resin formula parameters(molar ratio of formaldehyde to melamine, water content, diglycol, and caprolactam content)on the properties of the modified MF resin was investigated.Properties including ambient and low temperature shelf lives, burst strength, surface bond strength and abrasion resistance were evaluated. The results showed that the modification with diglycol and caprolactam is an effective way to improve stability and flexibility of MF resin.Optimal ranges of parameters were also presented in this paper.
