To meet the demand of the automotive industry for an odorless wood/polypropylene composite, thes made a research on WPC.They used odorimetry,Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis methods to investigate the reasons for WPC composites emitting an irritant odor, and found that the odor was caused by the weak thermal stability of the WPC.To improve compatibility between the wood powder and the polypropylene, they chose several additives, including sodium hydroxide, coupling agents, adsorbent, etc,to pre-treat the wood powder. The test results showed that pre-treating wood powder with sodium hydroxide was the most effective way to relieve the irritant odor from WPC.According to the optimum pre-treatment methods presented in this paper, the odor of the composite made from treated wood powders was able to meet the demand of Grade 3.0 according to the Shanghai Volkswagen Standard PV 3900.
