The pH values and buffering capacities for 10 plantation woods were investigated. The results were as following: 1)there was a slight difference among the pH values of plantation woods, while a significant difference among the buffering capacities, the pH values in 10 plantation woods ranged from 4 to 5, however the pH value of Populus nigra ×P.simonii Carr.cv.‘Zhonglin Sanbei-1’(Poplar Sanbei No.1) was above 7; 2)the acid buffering capacities in the softwoods changed between 3 and 7, however the acid buffering capacities of heartwood in Pinus taeda was above 8, the acid buffering capacities in 3 hardwoods were between 0 2 and 30; 3) the base buffering capacities in the softwoods was between 2 and 8, but in the heartwood of Pinus taeda was above 8 only. the buffering capacities in 3 hardwoods was between 3 and 34;4) the pH value was lower in juvenile woods than in mature woods for most plantation woods, but in ‘Poplar Sanbei No.1’ the pH value decreased with growth rings increased.
