In order to extend the public use of identifying Chinese softwood species, an online softwood search system was developed based on the IAWA List of Microscopic Features for Softwood Identification（IAWA）, imitating the InsideWood Hardwood Database module. The retrieval system is a basis online system for the anatomical identification of more than 140 species of Chinese softwood. The database contains descriptions of anatomical characteristics and microscopic images. The experimental trial showed that the retrieval system can effectively identify softwood species based on microscopic features.
