Physical Properties of Native Quercus Acutissima and Quercus Variabilis Timber in China
The physical properties of native sawtooth oak(Quercus acutissima) and oriental oak(Q.variabilis) timber in China were tested according to relevant Chinese national standards. The results showed that the air dried wood density of the tested timber were high and increased gradually from bark to pith. The dimensional stability in the radial direction presented better than that in the tangential direction, and the dimensional stability of the sapwood was greater than that of the heartwood. The shrinkage and swelling of Q.variabilis wood samples were less than those of Q.acutissima.Therefore,the dimensional stability of Q.variabilis was little bit better than that of Q.acutissima.
