Evaluation of Bending Performance of Structural Lumber Using Nondestructive Methods
A study was conducted to evaluate the bending performance of Douglas-fir structural lumber based on two different types of stress wave equipment. The dynamic performance, based on the stress wave tests, was compared to the result from the static bending test. The failure modes of structural lumber, and the impact that knots had on the static test, were analyzed. It was found that the correlation between the dynamic and static test results was high.Fibrous tension and brash tension were the two main failure modes. When knots appeared within the midspan range, and the ratio of knot diameter to knot depth of the cross section was high, the structural lumber was prone to brash tension failure.
