Wheat Straw/Polyethylene Composites Made by Hot-pressing Technology
Most woody-fiber based plastic composites have been made through the traditional extrusion process. However, difficulty handling some large sized bio-fiber and limited board width when using a small mould were among the barriers that prevent further development of wood-plastic composites. The authors,in this study, used the common hot-pressing technology to explore the potential of developing wheat straw/polyethylene composites. Polyethylene pellets were milled into a powder and mixed with the straw strands. The mixture was then preheated before hot pressing. It was found that the preheating not only reduced the hot pressing time, but also improved the bonding between the straw and polyethylene powder. The selected performance of the straw-polyethylene composite had a modulus of rupture of 14 MPa,modulus of elasticity of 1.1 GPa,internal bonding strength of 0.3 MPa,and thickness swelling of 4.05%.
