High speed milling technology has made a great impact on the process improvement in the wood product industry. However, the abrasion of machine tools is still an obstacle for implementing high speed milling technology. To study the abrasion behavior of high speed milling tools, the author selected a widely-used TiAlN coated tool to mill three commercial hardwood samples. The result indicted that milling speed, sample hardness, moisture content, and grain direction had a considerable effect on tool wear.It was noticed that reducing friction with a proper tool coating was an effective way to minimize tool abrasion.
