Machinability of Phenol Formaldehyde Resin Densified Poplar Lumber
According to the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) and the Chinese domestic manufacturing specification of solid wood flooring, the machinability of phenol formaldehyde(PF) resin densified poplar lumber was evaluated. The properties evaluated included cross-cutting,planning,tenonning,and sanding.Compared with the untreated control samples, the densified samples exhibited considerably better performance.Machining defects, such as torn grain and fuzzy surface, were reduced.Surface smoothness and flatness of machined sections were also improved. The results indicated that the densification of low density and fast growing poplar lumber with PF resin improved the overall machinability and added value to its flooring products.
