Effects of Heat-Treatments on the Natural Durability of Dahoma
The Ghanaian wood dahoma(Piptadeniastrum africanum),which has been treated with four heat-treatment methods to effectively reduce its unpleasant smell, could be used as an alternative to the precious traditional commercial species iroko(Chlorophora excelsa).Following heat treatments, there were few changes in the average weight loss and in the natural durability when the treated wood was subjected to the white-rot fungus Coriolus versicolor for 12 weeks.Furthermore, the decay resistance was increased with two heat-treatments and the natural durability was therefore improved from class 2 to class 1.
