Fracture Toughness of Plantation Timber of Chinese Fir and Masson Pine
Chinese Fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) and Masson Pine (Pinus massoniana) were selected for study on fracture toughness. The test followed the standard of ASTM (E399) and GB 4161 84“Method for plane strain fracture toughness of metallic materials”. The testing results showed that K IC in TL direction of Chinese Fir was 4.812 MPa·mm 1/2 while Masson Pine was 9.667 MPa·mm 1/2 .Geometry and size of cracked specimen had no significant effect on fracture toughness. In order to satisfy the state of plane stress and stability of testing, thickness of specimen was recommended 20,3,0 mm(decided by width of growth ring).
