This paper describes application of press-drying process to Schi- ma superba, 25 mm thick lumber could be dried to 19% moisture content in 1～2 hours by this method. The results obtained from the test shows that there are significant effects of drying temperature on drying time and platen pressure on thickness loss; there is a relationship between the sawing pattern and internal check of dried lumber. Compared with the flat-sawn lumber, the quarter-sawed lumber has less internal check affer press-drying.* The press-drying method is suitable for any hardwood species, especially for some valuable species used for carving in the small-scale craft factory.
