Study on Corn Cob Modified by Calcium Carbonate Microcrystals and Its Preparation as Adhesive Filler for Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesive
In China, the wood-based panel industry consumes a large amount of industrial-grade flour as the adhesive filler every year. In this paper, corn cob powder was modified by impregnating with CaCl,2, and Na,2,CO,3, two-phase inorganic salt solution and used as UF filler for manufacturing plywood. The results showed that calcium carbonate microcrystals were successfully formed in the inner pores of corn cob powder by impregnating and drying calcium chloride and sodium carbonate aqueous solution twice. 250 purposely modified corn cob powder was evenly dispersed in urea-formaldehyde glue. When the modified corn cob powder was used as filler, it effectively prevent UF glue from precuring and significantly reduced the viscosity. The adhesive strength of the plywood was increased by 18.8% and the formaldehyde emission was decreased by 27.1%.
