The authors prepared red oak veneer reinforced with low density polyethylene films as a face material to be overlaid on high density fiberboard(HDF). Response Surface Method was used to optimize the finishing process. The results showed that surface bond strength of the overlaid HDF samples was significantly affected by not only hot pressing temperature and pressure, but also interaction effects between hot-pressing time and pressure as well as jointed effects between hot-pressing temperature and time. Under the optimized process conditions, such as 1 MPa hot-pressing pressure and 130 ℃temperature under 3 minutes duration, the surface bond strength of the overlaid HDF samples reached 1.60 MPa, which met the requirement of the National Standard GB/T 15104-2006 "Decorative Veneered Wood-based Panels".
