Non-destructive Detection of Knot in Sawn Timber Based on Air-Coupled Ultrasonic
Based on relationship between transmission coefficient of air-coupled ultrasonic wave and wood density, a new testing method for knot defect detection was developed. Experiments for detecting defects of Chinese fir specimens were conducted using a self-developed air-coupled ultrasonic imaging instrument. Results showed that the new method could be used in detecting not only visible knots on lumber surfaces, but also invisible segment defects inside lumbers.
