White rot fungi is one kind of main wood decay fungi. It secretes many kinds of enzymes, such as lignin degrading enzymes, cellulose degrading enzymes and hemicellulose degrading enzymes.The enzymes depolymerize wood cell substances including lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose, which are nutrients for the enzymes. Because of the depolymerization, chemical and physical properties of wood could be changed quite a lot by white rot fungi. In recent years, tremendous progress has been obtained in research field about fungi mutritions, transmitting way of enzymes, mechanism of enzyme degradation, effect on wood properties and molecular genetics of decay fungi.In the near future, it is hoped to restrict white rot decay through changing fungi gene with gene engineering.
