The hydrophilic and flammable properties of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) based aerogels limit their applications. To alleviate these challenges
using CNF as the matrix
both chitosan (CS) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)
2
) as the flame-retardant additives
and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the hydrophobic agent
a hydrophobic and flame-retardant CNF-based aerogel (named CCMP aerogel)was made through ultrasonic homogenization compounding and freeze-drying at a low temperature. The novel constructed CCMP aerogel presented a typical three-dimensional mesh structure and a low density (40.10 mg/cm³). The ultrasonic homogenization treatment evenly distributes CS and Mg(OH)
2
on CNF surface. Adding both CS and Mg(OH)
2
in the aerogels led limiting oxygen index (LOI) value up to 54.4%. Moreover
the added PDMS results a water contact angle (WCA) of 139.0 ± 1.3° in the hydrophilic CNF-based aerogel. This study provides a new approach for constructing CNF-based flame-retardant hydrophobic aerogels.
